: If you’re eating pizza from the president of the pizzamaker-certifying organization Associazione Pizzaiuoli Napoletani, it better be good. Fortunately, this West Village pizza joint satisfies in Neapolitan-size fashion. With an oven that was handmade from the lava clay of Mount Vesuvius and a casual dining room, Kesté does a great job of setting an authentic Italian pizzeria vibe. But what is most convincing is what comes out of that oven: thick-crust pies that rank among the best in New York. The pizzas skew toward the simple, as they should, with the classic margherita (tangy tomato sauce, basil and fresh mozzarella) achieving Naples-like impressiveness. Alternatively, the Pizza del Papa, loaded with butternut squash cream, smoked mozzarella, red and yellow peppers, and zucchini, might not be traditional, but the flavors work well with the doughy crust. Gluten-free pizza is also offered. Choose from salads as well as sides such as homemade milky burrata paired with prosciutto di Parma. Italian wines are available by the glass, bottle and half liter; there’s a selection of grappas, too. Finish with tiramisu, or if you're still craving pizza, Nutella pie.
