Fabio Piccolo Fiore Restaurant Review:

At first glance, this Midtown East eatery appears to be a quaint Italian restaurant, but step past the bar and the huge room is dotted with large round tables where plus-size parties of diners feast on sizeable plates of pasta and hunks of grilled meat. The menu, which leans toward Tuscany and Abruzzo, also offers a few dishes from other regions: the orecchiette Pugliese nicely blends small ear-shaped pasta with broccoli rabe, garlic and oil. For something lighter, start off with grilled portobello mushroom, roasted peppers, asparagus, artichokes, scamorza cheese and smoked salmon; or try the Cocktail Fabio, with select shrimp, crabmeat and oysters. Of course, save room for the meat dishes: boneless chicken pieces with garlic and rosemary with a touch of balsamic vinegar; the juicy filet mignon; or the rack of lamb with fresh mint. The branzino, dressed tableside by the friendly Italian-speaking waitstaff, is as flaky as it should be. If you don’t see anything you like, put in a special request: chef Fabio Hakill will make nearly anything you want (as long as he has the ingredients for it).
