After a day of work or, perhaps, a turn about the exhibitions at MoMA, consider a meal at the Bar Room of The Modern. This less formal (and more affordable) counterpart to the fine dining establishment has a lounge-like feel and a rowdy and warm ambience. Chef Gabriel Kreuther has created a menu of casual, good Alsatian-style fare. Start off with the signature tarte flambée with crème fraîche, onion and applewood-smoked bacon before moving onto heartier plates like house-made country sausage with sauerkraut and whole grain mustard sauce or duck confit à l’orange with cauliflower and fingerling potatoes. More than two dozen wines by the glass are available, while the cocktail section revisits classics and offers "Modern Interpretations" such as The MoDERN MaRTINI made with cilantro-infused Tanqueray gin and fresh lime juice. Craft ales and lagers from Brooklyn's Sixpoint Brewery are on draft, plus there are a number of German, Belgian and Austrian beers by the bottle. Don't think that non-alcoholic tipples are neglected here, though. Rather, you'll find options like Fever Tree Bitter Lemon soda and sparkling apple cider.
