Dining room at North Square, New York, NYFrom the outside, it’s hard to get a sense if the subterranean eatery on the corner of Waverly Place and MacDougal Street (and attached to Washington Square Hotel) is a casual eatery or an elegant restaurant. But step inside and you’ll find it’s a little of both. Yoel Cruz’s nouvelle American menu has South American accents but with an emphasis on local ingredients: vegetable empanaditas made of tomato salsa, lentil sauce, feta cheese and avocado cream, and barbecue braised short ribs with collard greens sautéed with smoked bacon, sour cream, horseradish mashed potatoes and chipotle barbecue sauce. We recommend the Long Island duck breast with egg noodles, julienned vegetables, red shiso, currant and kumquat sauce. The affordable wine list hops around the globe with bottles from Languedoc to Long Island, Portugal to Piedmont.

delightful dinner

This is a delightful "american bistro" with a very well thought of menu and a fantastic wine list. We took friends again for dinner, and love to see them discover this lovely restaurant. Appetizers are very generous, and I have a hard time not ordering the chopped salad, while my husband is addicted to the duck confit roll. All entrees are delicious, and there is something for everyone: American, Latin American, simply grilled or with a sauce. Everything tastes fresh, and the service is professional without being stuffy. The cocktails are fun, but as a wine lover, I am thrilled to always find a great bottle of wine below $50. The tables are large, and you never feel pressured to leave. The lounge next door offers great burgers and cocktails. Prices are unbeatable!

North Square - I was embarrassed to take friends here.

I have always had pleasant experiences at North Square - decent food, nice atmosphere, etc. However, all of that changed on Sunday 9/21/2008. With a few friends, I arrived for a 12:30 PM brunch reservation. The hostess was most friendly and we were soon seated. However, our waiter barely paid us any attention. After getting our first cups of juice and coffee, it was nearly impossible to get a refill. We asked for a few items to be brought out early to nosh - even after asking multiple times, most of the appetizer items were either forgotten or brought out at the same time as the meal. And then there was the food... the pumpkin pancakes were barely palatable. The challah french toast was literally a few pieces of soggy bread. The only redeeming parts of the meal were the bacon, the bagel and cream cheese, the potatoes, and the fruit salad (basically things that just required minimum preparation). I have never had such a bad brunch experience in NYC - whether this was just an off-day or it is indicative of a larger problem at North Square, I cannot say. I can say that I will never go back there again. When our waiter finally arrived with the bill, I had to remind him which items, which were listed on the bill, never made it to our table.
