Omido Restaurant Review

: Restaurants in tourist-packed parts of town have never had much incentive to offer a great dining experience. But Omido, a Japanese-sushi eatery next to the Ed Sullivan Theater and within stone-throwing range of Times Square, is different. The AvroKO-designed spot is bedecked in warm woods from floor to ceiling and centered by an island sushi bar where the chefs quietly go about their work slicing and dicing. The menu is split between hot and cold plates. The braised Kobe short ribs are tender and juicy, but Omido hits its mark with sushi, the more stripped down the better. Its signature rolls---the Ja-Do, soy-marinated salmon, asparagus and tempura flakes; and the Temari, foie gras-topped tuna, yellowtail and salmon---are creative, but this place excels at plain old sushi. The eel, amberjack and tuna melt once they hit the tongue. That alone is reason to go back.
