: Live music, impressive food and fine wine can be found at this hidden gem in Pasadena. Contemporary flourishes---like colorful panels beneath the bar and bold colors on the server outfits and the menu---in a century-old building set the tone. For many, the eight wine flights and eight cheese flights (which come with suggested pairings of the two) will be enough for a perfect evening out. Ingredients, from domestic and imported fromages through fish from Santa Monica Seafood, are topnotch. You'll be humming with happiness from the duo of beef sliders, which features Mandarin-glazed short rib between fancy potato chips plated with achiote-lime marinated skirt steak atop Parmesan aïoli creamed corn. We also like the Maryland blue crab cakes, crispy outside and delicate inside, still with the taste of the sea. The meat-intensive menu---a Kobe burger, various cuts of Angus beef and Australian lamb---hits a high note with the Kurobuta pork chop. Char on the outside yields to juice and sweetness on the interior. Even the dessert menu employs first-rate products, like a trio of gelatos each made with chocolate from a different part of the world. The wine list offers 42 by-the-glass selections, all properly stored in a Cruvinet. Even Château d'Yquem can be sampled that way.
