One of the first big-time Mexican restaurants in New York is still going strong after more than a decade. After you take in the festive décor with brightly colored crêpe paper constructions hanging from the ceiling, by all means sidle up to the bar and order one of the signature pomegranate margaritas. The upscale regional-Mexican fare---most of the menu items hail from Mexico's culinary Mecca, Oaxaca---is consistently good and presented with flourish. Guacamole is made tableside in a traditional stone bowl, and tortillas are prepared on a griddle in the back of the dining room. Other great choices are the huitlacoche-stuffed chicken; the multi-layered tortilla pie with shredded chicken, cheese and chile poblano sauce; or the lamb shank braised in a wonderful chile sauce. Also located at 61 Columbus Ave., 212-977-7700. |
