THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill Restaurant Review:

About the restaurant & décor: The Dumbo outpost of this Miami restaurant combines the feel of flashy Miami with Manhattan views in a sprawling space in the Empire Stores complex, with 11,000 square feet, 300 seats and an outdoor patio. The lighting is low, the feel is sexy.

Likes: Sushi, skirt steak, goat cheese croquettes, cocktails.
Dislikes: Loud music makes it hard to have conversation.

Food & Drinks: Sugarcane Raw Bar Grill divides its menu, devised by chef Timon Balloo, into raw bar dishes, food from its Japanese robata grill, sushi and sashimi, and globally inspired small plates. From the latter category, goat cheese croquettes have a crispy exterior that yields to a creamy ball of tangy cheese, made just a bit sweet with membrillo marmalade. Brussels sprouts with orange and soy creep over the edge of too sweet and too gloopy, but skirt steak cooked over the open fire grill is beautifully charred and herbaceous with chimichurri. There’s also a perfectly respectable 20-oz. bone-in rib-eye with creamy polenta if you rather go for a full plate. Otherwise, sushi is fresh and expertly made. Cocktails, like a beet mojito and Prosecco mixed with blood orange purée and St-Germain, are sophisticated and well-balanced. For dessert, a sundae with Nutella ice cream, a Nutella brownie and cracker jacks for crunch is indulgent.
