| A few years after the millennium, Sweetwater Tavern was a mecca for the hipster neighborhood’s grungiest. It was dirty and dodgy, but they made a potent cocktail. All that disappeared, except for the potent cocktails, when the beloved spot was sold and reopened as a French-inspired tavern, serving upscale dishes to a growing foodie demographic in Williamsburg. But you don’t have to be a B-Burg gourmand to enjoy this tin-walled and -ceilinged eatery (in fact, Manhattanites regularly make the trek). Dive into the salt and chili calamari served with organic baby arugula and lemon aïoli. Seared scallops with truffled celery root purée, sweet peas and mushrooms or the grilled hanger steak with sautéed broccoli rabe and buttermilk battered onion rings also can't be beat. It’s hard to miss on a menu this good, which is why few people actually miss the old Sweetwater. |
