Villard Michel Richard Restaurant Review

: This “bistro” is the less formal arm of Villard Michel Richard, a culinary complex from chef Michel Richard in The New York Palace. (The adjacent Gallery at Villard Michel Richard serves sophisticated French fare while Pomme Palais by the lobby offers pastries and sandwiches.) The cuisine may be on the casual side here, but the opulence of the Villard Mansion still makes for a grand dining setting. Be sure to have a look at the Jeffrey Beers-designed glass room holding up to 1,000 bottles of wine (there's a table that can be reserved inside the cube). There is a bar area, but instead of being a place to meet and mingle it seems intended for guests waiting for tables. Many Richard staples are on the menu as is a tasty dose of American comfort food and French bistro classics. Start with the crab cake with leeks or salad frisée with lardons and a poached egg. The lobster burger is popular, and deservedly so. Meanwhile, the fried chicken, inspired by Richard’s first visit to KFC in 1974, is devoid of the overly greasiness one often finds in such a dish. The Colonel has nothing on this bird, which is cooked in a sous vide machine for two hours. Don’t skip out on the dessert, such as the decadent chocolate bar, with a pistachio-laced cracker wedged in its middle. The New York Palace’s wine and beverage director, Justin Lorenz, oversees the massive wine list, which is shared with Gallery at Villard Michel Richard. The selection leans Gallic and has some affordable options by the bottle and glass. Classic and designer-oriented cocktails are also imbibing alternatives.
