Dining room at Vinegar Hill House, Brooklyn, NY

Vinegar Hill House Restaurant Review

: Set in a quiet, artist-packed pocket of Brooklyn, this down-to-earth restaurant is helmed by Jean Adamson, the former chef of Manhattan’s hipster-haven Freemans. The décor is all rough-hewn Americana, right down to the flag with thirteen stars, the wood floors and the free hot cider. Here, Adamson ditches Freemans' hipster food tropes for fare that’s a bit more personable---it's cooked in the wood-fired oven at the center of the room, after all. The menu changes seasonally, but options have included shaved market vegetables with toasted almonds, wild cilantro and honey-cayenne vinaigrette; black pepper tagliatelle with cherry tomatoes, cranberry beans and basil; and boneless braised short ribs with Maytag blue cheese, heirloom tomatoes and croutons. The kitchen misses when venturing too far from the American aesthetic, such as with the spaghetti and meatballs. Nonetheless, when you can finish with either a hot buttered rum or cake made with Guinness and cream cheese, all is forgiven. The wine list is long on American wines, including a few New York standouts.
