Win 49, a sibling of popular sushi house Tomoe, is a fast, clean and cheap Japanese café where the food is just like obachan makes. In fact, that grandmother is Kaori Yahashi, the owner’s wife, who cooks the Grandma’s Taste items on the menu. Each day she makes only a couple of them (for example, tempting grilled eggplant or steamed spinach) at Tomoe and brings them over to this bright, tiled box space. You can assemble a great meal for less than $10: How about a chunk of hamachi marinated in shoyu and mirin, some shumai and hijiki? Order at the counter and sit on an Ikea stool. Why anyone would go next door (it’s a characterless Domino’s) is beyond us.
