Very spicy, very meaty, very good Thai cuisine in the East Village.

Zabb Elee Restaurant Review

: There are a lot of mediocre, ho-hum Thai restaurants in New York. Zabb Elee isn’t one of them. It’s not an upscale Thai establishment, but a moderately priced place with decent ambience. The thrill here is really on the plate. Zabb Elee focuses on the cuisine of Isaan, located in northeastern Thailand along the border with Laos. There’s no pad thai on the menu; instead, the dishes are very meaty with an emphasis on pork. The pork neck starter, for example, is overly unctuous but a carnivore’s delight. For something more health conscious, try the som tum, a papaya salad mixed with dried shrimp, pickled cabbage and tomato (and have plenty of water on hand because it’s spicy). Grilled meats (called nam tok) are also worth trying. Wash it all down with one of several Southeast Asian beers on hand.
