Starbucks Reserve Sun-Dried Ethiopia Harrar Coffee - Review

No Reservations

Starbucks Reserve Sun-Dried Ethiopia Harrar, one of a new range of limited-edition coffees

Starbucks is perhaps best known for its ubiquitous coffee shops, which have fanned out from Seattle to the far reaches of the planet. As part of its expansion, Starbucks has been slowly diversifying its product line, offering bottled iced coffees, and a line of premium Reserve coffee beans. The latter are neither mass-produced nor blended, but feature single-origin coffees from some of the world's most famous coffee-growing regions, carrying geographical designations like Sumatra Tapanuli and Kenya Tana River.

Starbucks Reserve Sun-Dried Ethiopia Harrar coffee is, as its name would suggest, grown near Harrar, an ancient walled city in southern Ethiopia. Coffee farmers in this hot, sunny region have, for centuries, been leaving their beans out to dry in the sun. The resulting concentrated flavors are unique and earthy, revealing subtle hints of nutmeg and caramel, with none of that slight artificiality and uniformity of taste we associate with the typical Starbucks brew.

Living up to their name, Starbucks Reserve coffees are only available by the bean at select locations in major U.S. cities and are even scarcer by the cup. With supplies so limited, we only wish it was possible to make a reservation — either to enjoy a cup in one of their shops or to purchase a bag for home brewing.
