In this inviting little square of a room, native New Yorker Melissa O'Donnell cooks American bistro food that's as basic, yet essential, as her restaurant's name. Dishes like a fabulously gooey baby spinach salad with beets, goat cheese, warm pancetta dressing and cod with braised lettuce and a few drips of red wine reduction on the mashed potatoes won't make you go wow, but they satisfy in a homey way that'll make you a regular. Dining solo? Sit at the wooden bar looking into the kitchen. With a group? Sit at the two communal tables made for meeting your neighbors. A creative wine list of boutique bottles from around the world make for good pairings with food. O'Donnell has worked at First and Le Zoo, so she knows just the right ingredients for creating successful downtown eateries (she's also in charge of Salt Bar on Clinton Street, the Lower East Side's restaurant row).
