RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

First, chefs Charlie Palmer (Charlie Palmer at Bloomingdale's South Coast Plaza) and then David Myers (Pizzeria Ortica) opened restaurants in OC. Now, LA's Pizzeria Mozza, from chefs Mario Batali, Nancy Silverton and Joe Bastianich, is coming to Newport Beach. An opening date has not yet been announced for Pizzeria Mozza, which will be located in the former Dolce Ristorante space along ailing Newport's Mariner's Mile (800 W. Coast Hwy.). Until Pizzeria Mozza opens, OC foodies can enjoy classic Italian-style pizza at Il Dolce in Costa Mesa (1902 Harbor Blvd.). Il Dolce opened in January and also offers appetizers, salads and entrées with a touch of Argentine influence.

Italian bistro, deli and home store Francoli has reopened after relocating from Fashion Island to a historic building in Old Towne Orange. Francoli is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and features the same menu of Northern Italian dishes like pancetta omelets, panini sandwiches and hand-rolled cannelloni stuffed with ground beef, marinara sauces and Fontina and Parmigiano Reggiano cheeses. Francoli, 100 S. Glassell St., Orange, CA 92866, 949-721-1289.

Ruby's Diner is opening its first drive-in restaurant with roller skating car hop service at the end of March in Downtown Anaheim. Called The Ruby's Five Points Drive-In, this classic diner restaurant features an outdoor patio and an old-fashioned car hop with 12 drive-in spaces served by roller skating servers. The menu features a limited menu of 1940s diner items like burgers and root beer floats. The regular menu of burgers, fries, shakes and more modern California fare for breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served inside the retro-designed restaurant. This Ruby's Diner is located in Anaheim's historic and recently renovated Five Points Building, which is located at the Lincoln Avenue off ramp of the I-5 freeway.

True Food Kitchen is coming to the former Blue Coral space (next to Roy's and Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar) in Fashion Island this summer. Developed by integrative medical doctor and bestselling author Andrew Weil, True Food Kitchen focuses on "high quality, locally sourced ingredients to create ... food that nourishes mind, body and spirit." Fox Restaurant Concepts, which manages True Food Kitchen, has tagged chef Michael Stebner to oversee the menu, which is influenced by Mediterranean, Asian and California cuisines. The menu will feature soups, appetizers, salads, pastas, sandwiches, burgers, brick-oven pizzas and wood-grilled dishes. True Food Kitchen will also offer organic wine, beer and sake. True Food Kitchen, Fashion Island, 455 Newport Center Dr., Newport Beach, CA 92660, no phone available yet.
