Bistro West, which is located at The District in Tustin, opened in mid-December. The 300-seat restaurant specializes in bringing American-style "contemporary comfort foods" to guests in an upscale, yet casual environment. Chef Eugenio Martignago has created a menu featuring such classics as chicken pot pie, meatloaf, beef stroganoff, braised meats and fresh seafood. The wine list is reported to be rather extensive, with a selection of both domestic and international labels. Bistro West's original restaurant is located in Carlsbad. Roy’s Adds Lunch for the Holidays
Roy's at Fashion Island is now open for lunch through the holidays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Along with some fresh island-style salads at reasonable prices, Roy's has a three-course prix-fixe lunch menu for $26. Chef Falk Wins Gold Medal for OC Benedict
Chef Cale Falk of Casa Laguna Inn & Spa was recently awarded the top prize at the 2008 "Inn-credible Breakfast Cook-off" at a competition held by the Distinguished Inns of America. Falk took the gold medal by preparing the inn's "OC Benedict" dish, comprised of Dungeness crab rosti with Choron sauce, fried shallots and a ring of curry oil. Casa Laguna Inn & Spa is an intimate, yet sophisticated bed and breakfast inn located in South Laguna, which serves seasonally-inspired breakfasts to its guests each morning. The inn sits just across Pacific Coast Highway from Victoria Beach and is set in lavish gardens with a spa facility, pool, jacuzzi and a renovated 1930s private cottage. Take Home a Smoked Turkey at Beach Pit BBQ
Beach Pit BBQ, which has two locations, one in Newport-Mesa and the other in Old Town Tustin, is cooking up its succulent smoked turkeys for the holiday season. Each 18 to 20 pound turkey (serves 22 to 24 people) costs $95, with $10 from every smoked turkey purchased being donated to SOS charities. For larger events, Beach Pit BBQ can smoke a 22 to 24 pound turkey for $110 (serves about 30 persons). The restaurant also offers a tray of cornbread stuffing for $35, as well as group-sized items off its regular menu. Burgers & Brews at Pelican Grill
Pelican Grill's uber-sophisticated lounge at the Pelican Grill Golf Club and newly-opened Pelican Hill Resort is offering a Burgers & Brews menu on Monday evenings during NFL football season. While watching the game on life-sized HDTV screens, football fans nosh on eight speciality burger selections, including Brandt Farm beef, free-range turkey, American Kobe beef, Colorado lamb, ahi tuna, crab cakes, and surf and turf (Brandt Farm beef and half a Maine lobster). Or, order up the $50 burger Rossini, which is made with American-bred Kobe beef, sautéed foie gras and black-truffle Madeira sauce. Rendezvous, a family-owned New American cuisine restaurant at the train depot in downtown San Juan Capistrano, has closed. We will miss chef Peter Arachovitis' sumptuous cuisine, especially his goat cheese cheesecake, as well as the restaurant's delightful Art Deco décor and charming hospitality by mother-father duo Char and Yanni Ikonomou.
