Given the ultra-civilized dining room of this Murray Hill eatery, you'd be understandably mistaken if you assumed the patrons pulled up in shiny Bentleys instead of yellow taxis. The manor house décor enhances the elegant illusion, with ivory paneled walls, a distinctive Tiffany glass-domed ceiling, and tempting aromas emanating from the immaculate open kitchen. Lavishly attentive service completes the opulent image, while Geoffrey Zakarian’s upscale Euro-American menu encourages indulgent escapism. Take a cue from the luxurious trappings and err on the side of richness from the frequently-changing four-course menu. There’s bound to be a velouté for starters, and it’s a good beginning, whether made with buttery shellfish or earthy cèpe mushrooms. Other dishes to hope for: halibut with morel mushrooms, sugar snap peas and leeks; savory duck with fregula, mangoes and shiitake mushrooms; and a sweet Black Forest cake. Overall, such splendor makes one want to spend time out of town more often.
