Gotham Bar & Grill Restaurant Review: Gotham Bar & Grill has been a mainstay of the New York dining scene for more than 25 years, in great part due to chef Alfred Portale's stunning architectural presentations, creative techniques and intense flavors. During this tenure he's racked up awards and written cookbooks, in addition to branching out to open Gotham Steak in the notorious Fontainebleau Miami Beach. Helming the kitchen here are trusted disciples Jason Hall and Jacinto Guadarrama. Start off by ordering "market selections" like oysters with Champagne mignonette or indulge with handmade chitarra topped with white Alba truffles. Trademark dishes like Maine lobster pasta can be found alongside seasonal fare such as roasted Muscovy duck with coco blanc cassoulet, duck saucisson d'ail, acorn squash and quince quatre épices. Desserts include the signature chocolate cake. Diners can also opt for a five-course tasting menu priced at $95 per person. The exceptional wine list, overseen by wine director Eric Zillier, offers many bottles from smaller American boutique wineries. While Gotham might at times be overshadowed by newer, up-to-the-minute eateries, this downtown power spot with its soaring ceilings, billowy light shades and casually airy feel remains a favorite of ours. The prix-fixe lunch menu --- three courses for $31 --- is one of the best values in the city.
