Samuel Adams OctoberfestSam Adams is known for its Boston Lager, but the Boston beer company brews a slew of beer styles. Its Octoberfest (we forgive them for the Americanized misspelling) was introduced in 1989 and is brewed only a few months each year for a fall release. Blends of five roasts of malt impart flavors of toasted bread and sweet flavors including caramel and toffee, and its rich, deep reddish amber hue is reflective of the season. True to the style, this brew logs in at 5.6 per cent ABV and Bavarian Tettnanger and Hallertauer Noble hops are used sparingly to allow the maltiness to shine through. The delicate flavors of Cornish hens pair nicely with the deep caramel character of this brew; the roasty caramel malt blends well with the complex flavors of sausage; or match it with the decadent caramel and vanilla flavors of crème brûlée.
