Brouwerij Van Steenberge Piraat Belgian IPA

BELGIAN IPA

Brouwerij Van Steenberge Piraat

The name is Dutch for pirate, which is apropos, as this genuine Belgian triple is an historic example of an IPA that would have been brewed during the 17th and 18th centuries for consumption during voyages to the West or East Indies. A higher alcohol beer was required for its keeping qualities and food value, so that it wouldn’t just survive the trek but most likely also make the arduous journey more bearable. At 10.5 per cent ABV, Piraat packs a punch, and the warming alcohol comes through in the aftertaste. A true taste of Belgium, Piraat pours a golden color and brings forth a complex aroma of fruit and spice. While today’s IPAs tend to be quite bitter and hoppy, in this version, like in the ones brewed centuries ago, the hops are balanced with enough malt to give it a delightful mild sweetness. It is joined with flavors of coriander-like spiciness and tropical fruits that are compliments of the various yeast strains used during fermentation.

Price: $12 (25.4 oz.)
