About the restaurant: A night on the town in New York can very well be spent at a Broadway show, but we suggest venturing a bit farther south of the Theater District for an evening of epicurean entertainment at Eleven Madison Park. Chef Daniel Humm and Will Guidara, who are also behind The NoMad restaurant nearby, demonstrate theatrical flair while presenting one of the world's finest dining experiences. The stage is a landmark Art Deco building with 35-foot-high windows overlooking Madison Square Park. A renovation to the space brought new flooring and chairs, and other enhancements.

About the menus: Adjacent to the dining room is a bar that offers a tasting menu (five courses for $155, inclusive of gratuity) at tables in the bar area. The dining room tasting menu ($295 for 8-10 courses, inclusive of gratuity; wine pairings available for additional cost) changes four times a year with the seasons and pays homage to New York, both to its local ingredients and to its longstanding culinary traditions. Expect to devote three or four hours to the full experience as this "play" is made up of many acts, with little diversions along the way.

About the food: A meal might start with savory black and white cookies with cheddar and apple, then oysters with grapes, bulgur wheat and sorrel. A glass dome full of smoke is lifted to reveal smoked sturgeon, which is accompanied by pickles, a tin of caviar and a crumble inspired by an everything bagel. One of the courses is even served "behind the scenes" in the kitchen. A grater is brought to the table to prepare the carrot tartare, which is then placed on a board with several accompaniments for diners to garnish as they see fit. The signature duck may be paired with turnip and huckleberries. Whimsical touches continue with the cheese course arriving in a picnic basket, and later a magic card trick. (We won't spoil the fun by revealing the details.)

About the drinks: Wine director Cedric Nicaise's exemplary wine list touches on topnotch selections from around the world. You may even watch your bottle be opened with heated tongs that make a clean break on the glass neck --- no uncorking necessary. No less elaborate is the tea service, where the leaves are brewed three times so guests may taste how the flavors evolve. There are also ales and spirits made exclusively for Eleven Madison Park by Ithaca Beer Co. and St. George Spirits. The well-trained staff members operate like an immaculate machine and seemingly outnumber patrons by a ratio of 2 to 1.
