RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Visitors to Tipitina's have found surprisingly high-quality, creative late-night eats at the big purple catering truck chef Nathaniel Zimet perennially parks just outside the music club's door. Now, Zimet is showing what he can do in a more conventional dining environment at his new restaurant Boucherie, which he opened in the Riverbend neighborhood in December. His focus is on contemporary interpretations of Southern comfort food with standards of the French bistro kitchen in the mix as well. Look for mussels steamed with collard greens, house-made sausage and boudin, grit fries, cochon de lait, fresh pasta, ceviche and cheese plates. All prices are below $15. He plans to add dinner hours soon. Lunch Tues.-Sat. Boucherie, 8115 Jeannette St., New Orleans, LA 70118, 504-862-5514.

Pupuseria La Macarena Uptown is a new entry in the city's growing number of Latin American restaurants. It is the expansion of a Metairie restaurant of the same name and specializes in Honduran comfort food, like the stuffed cornmeal patties called pupusas, as well as tacos and other Mexican dishes. Soups and grilled meats round out the inexpensive menu. Pupuseria La Macarena Uptown, 8120 Hampson St., New Orleans, LA 70118, 504-862-5252.

Merry/Happy Chris-Kwan-Ukkah
Vega Tapas Cafe takes a decidedly nontraditional approach to the idea of Spanish "small plates" invoked in its name, so maybe it's fitting that the restaurant is celebrating a hybrid holiday this season. Vega Tapas marks Chris-Kwan-Ukkah---a combination of Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah---with a wide-ranging holiday menu that includes roasted mirliton and shrimp bisque, spinach salad with duck confit and cranberries; the 'Day After’ slider of grilled turkey, cranberry-satsuma sauce, bacon and arugula; braised venison ribs; and egg nog flan and brandied egg nog shooters. This five-course tasting menu costs $30 per person or $45 with a wine pairing. Vega Tapas is open for dinner nightly. Dinner daily. Vega Tapas Cafe, 2051 Metairie Rd., Metairie, LA 70005, 504-836-2007.

Another Step Toward Normal at Dooky Chase
Business at Dooky Chase is getting a little closer to normal with the return of dine-in lunch service. The landmark Creole restaurant was heavily damaged by the levee failures after Katrina and has been gradually rebuilding and resuming service in stages. Dine-in lunch is now available Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A buffet is served on Fridays and an a la cart menu is offered on the other days. Meanwhile, take-out service continues Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Owned by chef and cookbook author Leah Chase, the restaurant has been in business since 1941. Lunch Tues.-Fri.. Dooky Chase, 2301 Orleans Ave., New Orleans, LA 70119, 504-821-0600.
