RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Some of the greatest losses suffered during Hurricane Katrina in 2005 were the highly popular restaurants on the edge of Lake Pontchartrain. Now, Brisbi's Lakefront Restaurant & Bar has opened on the lakefront, in an elevated, hurricane-proofed structure on the site of those former dining spots. Facing the lake, and offering both indoor and outdoor seating, Brisbi's is a casual seafood house serving local seafood. Brisbi's features its own oyster bar, as well as stuffed po-boys, which the owners believe may become signature dishes. Chef David DeFelice is related to the family that owns Pascal's Manale Restaurant uptown. Breakfast Sun., Lunch Thurs.-Mon., Dinner Wed.-Mon. Brisbi's Lakefront Restaurant & Bar, 7400 Lakeshore Dr., New Orleans, LA 70124, 504-304-4125.

Sue Zemanick plans to open a new small plates restaurant in New Orleans called Ivy Sue Zemanick, executive chef at Gautreau's, revealed that she will team up with Gautreau's owners Patrick and Rebecca Singley to open Ivy, a new small plates restaurant. The new venture will occupy the space formerly held by the now-shuttered Vizard's Restaurant in Uptown New Orleans. Additionally, Singley is reportedly considering opening another new restaurant in the French Quarter building that most recently housed Wolfe's Restaurant. That space has sheltered one restaurant or another for more than two decades. Meanwhile, Zemanick is slated to compete on Bravo TV's "Top Chef Masters" competition, which debuts July 24, 2013. Gautreau's, 1728 Soniat St., New Orleans, LA 70115, 504-899-7397.

After a devastating fire last year that destroyed Hubig's Pies, a New Orleans institution, the company has finally found a new location and plans to rebuild. The New Orleans City Council has approved a proposal that will enable the company to build a new facility in the Faubourg Marigny. Showing a planned two-story, 16,000-square-foot building, the proposal must overcome one last hurdle: Since there has never been a building on the lot, the construction plan must be approved by the Historic District Landmarks Commission. Owner Drew Ramsey expressed confidence that approval will be granted.

Diners may choose from 14 of executive chef Chip Flanagan's small plates, and from a list of selected wines. Martinique Bistro Owners Purchase Dick & Jenny's
Kelly Barker and Cristiano Raffignone, owners of the uptown French restaurant Martinique Bistro, have reportedly purchased Dick & Jenny's. Raffignone, who also owns Cristiano's in Houma, LA, has been operating a pop-up version of Cristiano's at Martinique on Monday nights, but now plans to add some of Cristiano's signature dishes to the menu at Dick & Jenny's. Barker and Raffignone will be the third team to own Dick & Jenny's, which was originally opened by Dick and Jenny Benz, who sold the property to Will and Leigh Peters, former employees of the restaurant, in 2007. Although the restaurant has traditionally served its version of comfort food, Barker and Raffignone's other restaurants are more upscale, so regular customers are eager to see how the menu offerings will change under new ownership, and under the direction of current Dick & Jenny's chef Stacy Hall, who will work with Cristiano's executive chef Lindsey Mason. Dick & Jenny's, 4501 Tchoupitoulas St., New Orleans, LA 70115, 504-894-9880.
