Dan Pilkey, a sommelier with Addison at The Grand Del Mar, has attained the level of advanced sommelier from the American Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers, the premier international examining body for the wine industry. This accreditation process takes several days and includes lectures, tastings, and interviews, as well as written testing on theory, service and tasting. According to wine director Jesse Rodriguez, Pilkey is only the second sommelier in San Diego to attain this status (Dan Chapman of George's at the Cove also holds this certification). Pilkey will now have the opportunity to take the exam to become a master sommelier---the court's highest level and one that has been achieved by only 124 people in the U.S. Addison, The Grand Del Mar, 5200 Grand Del Mar Way, San Diego, CA 92130, 858-314-1900.
The state government is stepping in on behalf of the health of Californians and banning trans fatty acids, which are believed to raise cholesterol and contribute to heart disease. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill on July 25 prohibiting the use of trans fats in restaurants beginning in 2010, with California bakeries following suit in 2011. Cities such as New York City and Philadelphia have already adopted similar legislation, but California is the first to enact this ban statewide.
