Openings

Poway has a new cafe called Nutmeg. This family-owned spot serves up baked goods and breakfast items like buttermilk waffles and organic granola with Greek yogurt and local honey. Panini sandwiches are served with house-made chips. There's also a full espresso bar, as well as gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. The Commons has opened in the Gaslamp Quarter. The menu offers bar food like hot dog nachos, chili cheese tater tots, and macaroni and cheese balls, plus salads and wings sauced in a number of flavors, including lemon pepper, sweet chili, "volcanic" honey mustard and "infrared." There's also a daily happy hour from 3 p.m.-6 p.m. with $3 draft beers, $4 well drinks, $1 off all other drinks and half-price wings. The Commons, 901 4th Ave., San Diego, CA 92101, 619-696-8888.

San Diego Restaurant Week Returns
The California Restaurant Association presents the twice annual San Diego Restaurant Week. Featuring prix-fixe menus from more than 180 San Diego restaurants, guests can opt to dine for lunch or dinner September 23-28. Three different price choices are available for the two-course lunches and three-course dinners. Select a $10, $15 or $20 menu for lunch and $20, $30 or $40 menu for dinner. Celebrate the Craft Returns to The Lodge at Torrey Pines
Foodies, artisans and innovators will celebrate the bounty of fine ingredients and compelling chefs from California at the 10th annual Celebrate the Craft on September 30, 2012. Set on the lovely lawn at The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, some of San Diego's top chefs will gather for a day of cooking demonstrations and fine food. Growers, vintners and culinary artisans from California farms, bakeries and wineries will be on. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Tickets cost $75 per person. Chef Shuffle

Chad White, most recently of James Brennan and chef Brian Malarkey’s Point Loma eatery Gabardine, is now executive chef at Counterpoint restaurant. He is serving up dishes like grilled octopus with smoked tomato purée, chorizo and shishito peppers, and caramel apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream, smoked sea salt and mint.
