Openings

Respected culinary entrepreneur Terryl Gavre, who's partnered with chef Carl Schroeder on Bankers Hill Bar + Restaurant and Market Restaurant + Bar, is opening a new breakfast and lunch place called ACME Kitchen in the East Village this summer. This cozy, 1000-square-foot spot will serve up Southern-style cuisine like jalapeño corn muffins, pulled pork sandwiches, Saltine cracker-crusted fried chicken and Sloppy Joes. The casual setting will welcome 40 diners inside and another 40 outside at sidewalk tables. Gavre has been busy in her test kitchen perfecting her "angel" biscuits. Breakfast includes antioxidant-loaded smoothies, egg white omelets, and heartier huevos rancheros; lunch means grass-fed burgers, salmon BLTs, Cobb salads and beef kabobs. Dinner features Prime New York steak, duck breast and short ribs. Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call 858-756-1221. Lunch Mon.-Fri., Dinner Mon.-Sat., Brunch Sat. & Sun. Burlap Morphs into Searsucker; Chef Sinsay Departs
In the continuing Enlightened Hospitality Group (EHG) makeover, noted chef Anthony Sinsay has left the company to join Little Italy's La Villa. Sinsay helmed the Asian Cowboy-themed Burlap, which has been transformed into a North County outpost of Searsucker, chef Brian Malarkey’s most successful project to date. EHG hopes to reconnect with the local residents, who withdrew from Burlap over the past year, by bringing the energy of downtown's Searsucker to Carmel Valley. Enlightened Hospitality Group's pastry chef Rachel King has also left the company to join forces with Jason Knibb at Nine-Ten in La Jolla. Burlap, Del Mar Highlands, 12995 El Camino Real, San Diego, CA 92130, 858-369-5700.

Chef Shuffle

More shake ups within the Enlightened Hospitality Group (EHG), James Brennan and Brian Malarkey's restaurant group, as Herringbone's popular chef Amanda Baumgarten is no longer helming the La Jolla kitchen. A Top Chef alum, Baumgarten joined the group in 2011 and was a key player in Herringbone's success. Baumgarten came from the respected Water Grill in Los Angeles. All of the notable hired chefs within the fabric-themed group have departed at this point, leaving Malarkey to be the solo face of the restaurant group. Herringbone, 7837 Herschel Ave., La Jolla, CA 92037, 858-459-0221.
