Build your own bento box at Supertoro, now open at SOCIALEATS at The Gallery. The bright, minimalist fast-casual spot lets you get creative with choices ranging from crispy rice topped with spicy tuna, yellowtail, rock shrimp and more; a variety of hand or cut rolls featuring tuna, salmon, pork belly or grilled avocado; and seaweed salad and soba noodle salad. Verve Roastery Del Sur has opened in the Arts District, offering haute specialty roast coffees and a breakfast and lunch menu from Chopped alum chef Mario Tolentino, alongside pastries from chef Erin McKenna (Babycakes). Expect an airy, sprawling, Nordic-inspired space with blonde wood and sunny windows. Menu items include an acai and dragon fruit bowl; avocado toast with chives, radish, shallot and cultured butter; savory sourdough french toast with sunny side-up farm egg; a porchetta and truffle cheese sandwich; and buckwheat soba noodles with turmeric cauliflower, pickled cabbage and miso tofu. In Echo Park at the Mohawk Collective development, Revelator: Bar Avalon is ramping up to be an all-day affair serving wine, specialty coffee, and a new American menu highlighting local produce, meats and products. Chef Joshua Guarneri offers shareable small plates like summer squash and burrata on rye, and tonnato, farm eggs and dill. Sommelier and beverage director Nathaniel Muñoz curates a list of wines mostly from the Americas, with every wine on the menu being offered by the glass. Eve Wines, a store that will be connected to the restaurant, will offer a selection of wines from around the world. Chef-owner Helene An will open a new restaurant in Beverly Hills, Da Lat Rose, above her iconic Crustacean on Bedford Drive this fall. There will be tasting menus, a chef’s counter, and only a single seating at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and seatings at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Fia has opened in the former Wilshire space Fia has opened in the former Wilshire space, with a revamp of the patio and interiors by M. Winter Design. The restaurant features 300 seats (200 of them outdoors), several fireplaces, ferns, palms and a bocce court. Chef Brendan Collins offers a menu inspired by the Amalfi coast with a focus on rustic dishes, local seafood, and fresh house-made pasta. Options include big eye tuna carpaccio, oysters with fermented cabbage, capellini lobster Bolognese, braised rabbit tortellini, whole grilled dorade, and a Flannery beef rib-eye chop. Celebrated Tijuana-style tacos are found at DTLA’s new spot, Tacos 1986, on the corner of 6th and Spring Streets. Look for the former pop-up’s popular grilled meats and melted cheese in asada, adobada, mushroom and chicken tacos, as well as in quesadillas, mulitas and vampiros. Chef-restaurateur Jeremy Fall has opened Mixtape on Beverly Boulevard in the former BLD space. An atmospheric interior will feature art from the likes of Quincy Jones, Vic Mensa, Tokimonsta and Jaden Smith, and there’s a brunch playlist created by Robin Thicke. An eclectic menu inspired by Fall’s Tunisian-Caribbean-Jewish-French background offers beef cheek poutine, mussels and chorizo, a fried jerk chicken sandwich, pastrami agnolotti, smoked salmon and latkes, and shakshuka. Toscana owners Mike and Kathie Gordon Toscana Celebrates 30 Years & Makes Plans for Future
Toscana is celebrating 30 years in 2019, but the Brentwood restaurant is also looking towards the future. Owners Mike and Kathie Gordon have announced that they negotiated a 20-year lease renewal, starting in November 2019. They also plan to fully remodel the kitchen with design consultation from executive chef Luca Crestanelli. For this project, Toscana will be temporarily closed for about a month as of January 2, 2020, but next door Bar Toscana will remain open.
