Openings

Christopher Kostow and Nathaniel Dorn, both of The Restaurant at Meadowood, have brought The Charter Oak to downtown St. Helena. Dining family style is a focus, and the seasonal fare is created with the products of local purveyors as well as the venue’s own farm. Bar VIA is located inside the new boutique Hotel VIA across from AT&T Park baseball stadium (home of the San Francisco Giants). It offers upscale California dining and drinking, with local craft beers, wines and handcrafted cocktails. Seafood is a focus, with a raw bar, crudo and sashimi plates, as well as seasonal plates featuring local ingredients. On game days, the bar opens from 11 a.m. and offers stadium-inspired bites and drinks. Chef de cuisine is Leo Batoyon (AL's Place). Fieldwork Brewing Company has opened a beer garden in San Mateo One of the breweries leading the Bay Area craft beer boom, Berkeley-based Fieldwork Brewing Company is expanding throughout Northern California. The brewery has tap rooms and beer gardens in Napa, Sacramento and the flagship in Berkeley, and just opened a 4,500-square-foot European-style beer garden in San Mateo, with fire pits, bocce ball and a light food menu. A fifth location will open in Monterey in July 2017. Fieldwork is known for ambitious and innovative seasonal brewing under head brewer Alex Tweet. Open daily. Opening in late July 2017 is The Village Bakery, a bakery and restaurant from the Bacchus Management Group (Spruce, The Village Pub, The Saratoga). Replacing the former Woodside Bakery & Cafe, the new venture looks to provide simple, elegant American café food at an approachable price point. Tacolicious Launches MF Chicken for Delivery
The team behind Tacolicious have launced a new, delivery-only dinner service called MF Chicken, featuring whole and half Mexican-style rotisserie chickens, salads and sides such as fresh tortillas, rice, beans and grilled corn. Deliveries are through Caviar and available throughout San Francisco. Visit the official website for details or to order.
 

Chef Shuffle

The Alembic has a new executive chef. Rachel Aronow has an eclectic background that includes cheffing at Luma in Petaluma, teaching at the Coast Guard's cooking school as their youngest instructor and co-authoring a cookbook for cancer patients. She brings her community spirit and cooking chops to the Haight, with an eye towards seasonal nibbles from The Alembic's 1,000-square-foot dedicated garden. Closings

After a long dormancy that was meant to be temporary, Daniel Patterson's Oakland restaurant Haven has permanently closed. Haven, 44 Webster St., Oakland, CA 94607, no phone.
 
Longtime Berkeley sushi and, more recently, Japanese brasserie Joshu-Ya has closed. The space --- convenient to U.C. Berkeley --- is slated to become a student-friendly ramen restaurant in the coming months. Joshu-Ya Brasserie, 2441 Dwight Way, Berkeley, CA 94704, no phone.
 
Aperto has closed after 24 years at the corner of 18th and Connecticut, taking with it some of the coziest Italian dining in Potrero Hill. Aperto, 1434 18th St., San Francisco, CA 94107, no phone.
