RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Tacolicious has a new location in North Beach, joining restaurant outposts in San Francisco's Marina and Mission districts and a fourth in Palo Alto. (The group started with a Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market stand that remains popular on Thursday afternoons.) The North Beach space is generous, with black-and-white tile floors, a full bar and original works by local artist Paul Madonna, a staple for Tacolicious dining rooms. As at other locations, tacos with fresh, sustainable, seasonal ingredients anchor the menu, though snacks such as fried plantains and salads like the "marina girl" --- romaine, avocado, cucumber, radishes, pumpkin seeds and cotija cheese --- add further interest. Tequila-based and other cocktails are a highlight. No reservations. Lunch & Dinner daily. Tacolicious, 1548 Stockton St., San Francisco, CA 94133, 415-433-1800.

News Bytes

Chez Panisse Redux
Chez Panisse restaurant and its upstairs sibling Chez Panisse Café are back and seemingly better than ever after suffering a fire March 8, 2013. Championed by owner Alice Waters, the near-four-month rebuild involved past and present members of the restaurant's extended family, and led to a slight redesign, with a new Craftsman-style porch designed by original builder Kip Mesirow anchoring the exterior. There have been some tweaks to the cafe menu, and many details have been refreshed or improved, but the intent and overall spirit of both institutions remain intact --- even enlivened. Reservations can be made for the restaurant (dinner Mon.-Sat.) by calling 510-548-5525, or for the cafe (lunch & dinner Mon.-Sat.) at 510-548-5049. Chez Panisse, 1517 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA 94709, 510-548-5525.
