RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

A second location of Berkeley's beloved Ici ice cream shop, opened 11 years ago on College Avenue by Mary Canales, formerly the pastry chef of Chez Panisse, will debut in winter 2017 in downtown Berkeley. The heavily anticipated spot will feature the same seasonal array of elegant ice creams, chocolate-dipped cones, ice cream sandwiches and cakes. Milkshakes will be a new item at this outpost. Prepare to wait in lines similarly long (longer?) to those on College. Ici, 2079 University Ave., Berkeley, CA 94704, no phone.

International Smoke is a collaboration between Mina and Ayesha Curry Fans of Michael Mina's former wine-focused restaurant RN74 now have an altogether new project to explore in the same space at the base of Millennium Tower. International Smoke is a collaboration between Mina and Ayesha Curry, the celebrity cook, cookbook author and wife of basketball star Steph Curry of Oakland's Golden State Warriors. Curry's focus is barbecue, with "global approaches to fire, grilling and smoke," featuring elevated meat dishes made using spices, rubs, marinades and techniques from around the world. Tableside-service touches play a signature role. Beverages include seasonal cocktails, punch bowls, sangría and international and local beers, as well as a tangy menu of picklebacks and nonalcoholic options such as sweet tea. A central bar seats 20. Look for lunch in the coming weeks. Dinner nightly. International Smoke, Millennium Tower, 301 Mission St., San Francisco, CA 94105, 415-543-7474.

Now open in Walnut Creek is the East Bay's first location of Gott's Roadside, a high-end California burger mini-chain with a flagship in wine country's St. Helena. The fast-casual food is drive-in inspired – burgers, fries, shakes and franks – but with northern California pedigrees and a wine and beer list to match. The Walnut Creek outpost is the group's sixth, with a seventh future opening in Greenbrae. Gott's Roadside, 1275 S. Main St., Walnut Creek, CA 94596, 925-954-6243.

Barvale will open for dinner on December 7, 2017, in the Divisadero restaurant space that used to house La Urbana. The new Spanish concept led by Adriano Paganini (Delarosa, A Mano, Beretta, Lolinda) will include tapas-driven cuisine from executive chef Patricio Duffoo within a colorful dining room, standing-room-only tapas bar and red-hued "pintxos room" for large groups or private parties. Look for a complementary beverage menu of cava, sherry, gin, Spanish wines and cocktails from Spanish-born Jessica Everett. Paganini's empire is built on casual-chic accessibility, so expect the same with Spanish flair at this location. Barvale, 661 Divisadero St., San Francisco, CA 94117, no phone.

Recovery In Progress from North Bay & Wine Country Fires
In October 2017, at the end of harvest season, a series of devastating fires destroyed close to 9,000 structures across nine counties north of San Francisco, including Napa and Sonoma. More than 20,000 people were evacuated as the fires leveled entire neighborhoods and reduced many North Bay and Wine Country businesses, including restaurants, hotels and wineries, to ash. All affected communities have shown tremendous fortitude in their efforts to house, feed and care for the victims, and hundreds of Bay Area chefs and industry folks have contributed to the cause. As tasting rooms, restaurants and wineries reopen or rebuild across those regions, more than ever they need business and support. See this welcome message from Napa Valley or Sonoma County's Sonoma Strong update for more info.
