Somerville just got cue'd in, as in barbecue'd in, by way of a true southern-raised pitmaster. Michael Schmidt's barbecue joint The Bearded Pig serves up pulled pork, chicken and sliced brisket by the platter, along with sides of creamy southern slaw, collard greens and Texas corn pudding. Dining room of Empire Asian Restaurant & Lounge Big Night Entertainment Group has just opened its latest venture, Empire, at Fan Pier in the Seaport District. The hip restaurant offers a new twist to the area with nine rooms where you can nosh on traditional Asian dishes like pot stickers, steamed buns and house-fried rice. Nice finds include Singapore Street noodles with Madras curry, smoked pork ribs with red miso glaze and a seemingly endless supply of sushi, maki rolls and nigiri. City Landing opened in the former Sel de la Terre space on the waterfront. Chef/owner Bill Brodsky (formely the executive chef at the Wequassett Inn Resort & Golf Club for a decade) focuses on local flavors with a twist. Try dishes like the New Englander crab cakes with tomato aioli, goat cheese, pear and smoked tomato vinaigrette; Bostonian shrimp and grits with roasted peppers, linguica sausage and stone milled polenta; or an unusual take on fish and chips with remoulade, gingered slaw and pickled cucumber. The fun Back Deck opened in Downtown Crossing, offering the taste of being at your neighbor's backyard barbecue. Chef Paul Sussman fires up three grills to create a menu that features everything from grilled hot wings to singed house-made espresso marshmallows. Epicurean Flash Feast on August 16
You've heard about flash mobs before but now is your chance to participate in Boston's first epicurean flash feast. On August 16, a viral event will be taking place in 20 cities on five continents. Diner en Blanc offers a unique take on the "pop up" concept with an outdoor dinner organized by social media. The Boston event is being held at an undisclosed location and is limited to 1,000 guests. Participants are asked to dress in elegant white and bring their own epicurean picnic to a public space. The 21+ event starts at 6:30 p.m. and tickets are $25 to $35.
