BOSTON RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

La Motta’s Italian Specialties has opened in Boston The Aquitaine Group closed Union Bar & Grille and transformed the space into La Motta's Italian Specialties. The Bronx-style, Italian-American concept features everything from baked clams, mozzarella sticks and different styles of meatballs to chopped salad, chicken Parmesan, lasagna, shrimp scampi and “Bronx-style” thin crust pizza. La Motta's Italian Specialties, 1357 Washington St., Boston, MA 02118, 617-338-5300.

The long-awaited Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana opened at The Mall at Chestnut Hill in December. The New Haven-originated, coal-fired pizzeria moved into the former space of Papa Razzi. In addition to the regional chain's original tomato pies, try spinach, mushroom and Gorgonzola or the famous white clam pizza. Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, 199 Boylston St., Chestnut Hill, MA 02467, 617-964-7373.

Sure, you can go anywhere in Boston for pizza and a beer, but there is only one place in Charlestown that stands out for its wood-fired pies and impressive beer selection. Brewer's Fork delivers not-your-average pub fare in a comfortable setting. On the menu, you will find cured raw beef salad, Downeast mussels simmered with cider and apples, clam and bacon wood-fired pizza and oven roasted meatballs with sheep's milk cheese. Lunch & Dinner daily, Sun. brunch.

South Boston newcomer Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar has already made a name for itself with its crazy good tequila selection, tacos and Mexican-inspired dishes. While fresh oysters on the half shell and puffed nachos with braised chicken may seem an unusual combination, it all seems to work here. Dinner nightly, Brunch Sat. & Sun. Loco Taqueria & Oyster Bar, 412 West Broadway, South Boston, MA 02127, 617-917-LOCO.

Sfizi has taken over the former Mare space in the North End. Frank DePasquale's concept focuses on Mediterranean small plates with dishes from Portugal, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey and France. Menu items include Italian arancini stuffed with pulled rib meat and saffron rice, Portuguese grilled octopus with giant lima beans, Turkish chicken skewers and Spanish jumbo prawns sauteed with garlic, white wine and chili flakes. Sfizi, 135 Richmond St., Boston, MA 02109, 857-350-3105.
