Chef Dave Beran (Dialogue) will open a new restaurant, Pasjoli, this summer on Main Street in Santa Monica. The new community-centered Thai Town Marketplace will debut in May on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Western Avenue at the Metro Red Line stop. Chef Vito Iacopelli has transformed his former (now closed) WeHo restaurant Prova Pizzeria into a new Melrose joint, Provami. Look for wood-fired Neapolitan pies as well as pizza alla pala (an oval flatbread-like pizza on a paddle), salads and gelato. Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne will oversee food and beverage at the Downtown LA Proper Hotel Chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern) will oversee the food and beverage program at the Downtown LA Proper Hotel, scheduled to open in Summer 2019. Chef Thomas Ortega has opened Amorcito, a fast-casual concept in The Hangar food hall in Long Beach. (He’s also behind Amor Y Tacos and Playa Amor, one of GAYOT’s Best Mexican Restaurants in the Los Angeles Area.) On the menu are tacos, burritos, a New Mexico Hatch chile cheeseburger and more. Mar Vista welcomes Rasselbock Kitchen & Beer Garden, a new restaurant from Wirtshaus partners Bjoern Risse and Bülent Yildirim, who debuted their first Rasselbock in Long Beach three years ago. The new 2,000 square foot Mar Vista location includes an outdoor biergarten, as well as a full bar that offers an in-depth selection of German and Belgian beers (12 on tap.) Expect authentic German dishes with some modern twists, ranging from gourmet sausages with elk, wild boar and duck to goulash, schnitzel, burgers and salads. Chefs Josiah Citrin (Mélisse) and Hans Röckenwagner (Röckenwagner Bakery) teamed up to revive Frank Sinatra’s iconic Culver City hangout Dear John’s. (It was briefly renamed Lucky’s by a new owner last year.) The nostalgic vintage steakhouse setting remains, and the two chefs updated classic dishes including avocado crab Louie, oysters Rockefeller, a 20 oz. rib-eye, Prime NY Strip, Dover sole and lobster Thermidor. In Hollywood, Sorra has opened on the rooftop of Residences at Columbia Square in the former Filifera space, helmed by chef Chris Ono. Look for loungy patio dining chairs and white umbrellas; great views of the Hollywood Hills; a casual, contemporary Japanese-Mexican menu; and a prominent cocktail list. Later this summer, expect a ground floor restaurant from the building’s Culinary Lab group (Hinoki & the Bird, Rosaliné, Lost Property) and chef Brandon Kida (Hinoki & the Bird). Dinner nightly. Chef Eric Bost is striking out on his own with auburn. Chef Eric Bost, who was most recently executive chef at République, is striking out on his own with auburn. Chef Jason Kim (Forage) has flipped his Silver Lake restaurant Wolfdown into the more approachable Small Town without much ado. Look for a California menu that includes sea bass with green garlic aïoli, forbidden coconut rice with sweet potato, and brunch items like scrambled eggs with trout roe and, yup, avocado toast. Baroo was much beloved in its three-year Hollywood run that ended last year, and chef/owner Kwang Uh, with partner Mina Park, will open baroo 2.0 later in 2019. Meanwhile, they have opened Baroo Canteen, a tiny kitchen in East Hollywood at the Union Swap Meet, to “experiment and prepare” for the next baroo iteration. Chef/restaurateur Nancy Silverton (Osteria Mozza) will open a new Italian steakhouse in The Hollywood Roosevelt hotel next year named The Barish. It will reanimate the former Public Kitchen & Bar space after renovations that will include a large wood-fired grill in the dining room. Look for high-end steaks and meats alongside a menu of unique baked pastas, and a sophisticated Italian wine list. Sqirl chef/owner Jessica Koslow will open her much-anticipated “sqirl on the quick” sister store, Sqirl Away, in East Hollywood this fall. Look for it tucked into Vermont Avenue across from LA City College. She calls it a first cousin to Sqirl, which will offer grab and go items and likely signature dishes such as her curried beef cheek, savory rice porridges, rice bowls, and those culty brioche toasts with jam or ricotta. Chateau Hanare will feature a special kaiseki menu in honor of cherry blossom season Springtime Kaiseki Menu at Chateau Hanare
Chateau Hanare, the Japanese restaurant at Chateau Marmont, will feature a special kaiseki menu in honor of cherry blossom season. Available until the end of Spring, the Sakura Kaiseki from chef de cuisine Eijiro Nagano offers such dishes as lobster and avocado salad with caviar; Miyazaki A5 Wagyu with Santa Barbara uni; and an assortment of Kyoto-style sushi seasoned with truffle soy.
