Seafood-focused Angler, from chef-founder Joshua Skenes of Saison Hospitality (Saison), has launched at the Beverly Center. There is an emphasis on fire cooking, with a wood-burning hearth as the center of the kitchen. A sibling outpost is located on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. Santa Monica welcomes back chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger with Socalo Santa Monica welcomes back chefs Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger as they open a new all-day Mexican gastropub called Socalo in the Gateway Hotel. (Their Santa Monica Border Grill closed three years ago.) Look for indoor and outdoor seating, Tijuana regional inspired cuisine including breakfast burritos, ceviches, tortas and tacos, a wide tequila selection, Mexican microbrews on tap, and other Latin-themed beverages. This summer, chef David Chang (Momofuku, Majordomo) will open his first West Coast location of Fuku, Momofuku’s fast casual fried chicken shop, on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Look for the spicy fried chicken sandwich, a quarter or half chicken, and chicken fingers. Sides include chickpea mac, sweet and sour mustard greens, waffle fries and five-spice rice pudding. Executive chef Ashley Abodeely serves up luxe American fare at The Restaurant at Arts District Firehouse Hotel in DTLA. The historic 1927 firehouse has been restored to a modern boutique hotel; the restaurant is mostly a charming, long covered patio running the length of the brick-walled building, while the marble bar perches just inside. Jeremy Fox has opened an expansive new restaurant at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, Birdie G’s. A casually modern dining room is airy and light, and there’s a sprawling patio and long bar that serves stylish craft cocktails. Look for classic regional American fare crossed with Fox’s family recipes and California seasonal ingredients, including rib-eye steak, wood-grilled chicken, king salmon crudo and sweetbreads Texas toast. Nic Adler teamed up with restaurateur Stéphane Bombet and culinary director Steven Fretz on Nic's on Beverly. The space boasts particularly fine outdoor dining, as diners who recall previous tenants The Ponte and Terrine will appreciate. Chef Danny Elmaleh’s popular restaurant in Sherman Oaks, Mizlala, has opened a sister spot, Mizlala West Adams. Look for an outdoor patio with olive trees (also dog friendly), a pickle bar, and dishes including hummus salad, a falafel pita sandwich, chicken shwarma, lamb and beef patties, and a tahini halvah shake. Chef Lincoln Carson's Bon Temps is a modern French brasserie with industrial flair, in keeping with its location in downtown LA's Arts District. Expect dishes like Maine scallops with morels, ramps and peas, and a Valrhona chocolate soufflé for dessert. Chef Brandon Kida continues to put his stamp on the globe-trotting fare at Hinoki & the Bird in Century City. In Venice, Makani has landed chef Miles Thompson, who was cooking most recently at Michael’s. Look for four “micro-seasonal” tasting menus at dinner (omnivore, pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan) and Thompson will create a nose-to-tail meat program with in-house butchering as well.
