HAWAII RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Colin Nishida, proprietor of every local and visiting celebrity chefs' favorite hangout, Side Street Inn, has taken his game to the next level with this new spot which bears little resemblance to the sports bar he opened in 1992. Side Street Inn on Da Strip offers all the favorite pupu from the bar including the pork chops, fried rice and steamed clams with Portuguese sausage in a more refined setting. Dinner nightly. Side Street Inn on Da Strip, 614 Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu, HI 96815, 808-739-3939.

Capitalizing on Honolulu's seemingly insatiable appetite for burgers, fries and shakes, Honolulu Burger Co. has opened its doors. The Makiki area near the University of Hawaii campus is a rich environment for this casual eatery, which features Big Island beef. In addition to the classic burger choices, there are a few sandwiches offered. One entitled "The Meat" caught our attention: it starts with a 1/4 pound of sliced Big Island beef followed with kalua pig, Black Forest ham, bacon, corned beef and sautéed onions topped with barbecue sauce and horseradish cream. Most definitely not for the faint of heart! Lunch & Dinner daily. Honolulu Burger Co., 1295 Beretania St., Honolulu, HI 96814, 808-626-5202.

Morimoto Waikiki has opened at The Waikiki EDITION hotel. "Iron Chef" Masaharu Morimoto has created a menu featuring fresh seafood and local fruits and vegetables, including signature dishes such as toro tartare made with wasabi, Maui onion and dashi soy. Morimoto Waikiki offers a refined setting, with luxurious dining rooms, waterfront tables on an open-air lanai, and cocktail tables surrounded by open fire pits. Morimoto Waikiki, 1775 Ala Moana Blvd., Waikiki, HI 96815, 808-943-5800.
