HAWAII RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

While Volcano has a limited selection of restaurants, at least two of them are excellent and the recently opened Cafe Ono is one of them. The garden setting is lush and serene and you can browse the gallery and gift shop while your food is prepared. The menu is vegetarian, but far from boring, and while the portions are hearty, the presentation and flavors are contemporary and complement the artworks and plants surrounding you. The menu constantly changes, but look for the robust soups to take the chill off the Volcano mist and you don't want to miss the spinach lagasna if it's offered that day. Cafe Ono , Volcano Garden Arts, 19-3834 Old Volcano Rd., Volcano, HI 96785, 808-985-8979 .

Primarily for take-out (though there is outdoor seating in the courtyard), India Cafe Curry Express boasts a tandoori oven for making naan and roasting. This spot features daily specials of South Indian cuisine with a Malaysian flare. Featuring a good array of vegetarian and vegan offerings, this is a good spot for diners seeking meat-free choices without sacrificing flavor. Lunch & Dinner daily. India Cafe Curry Express, Kailua Shopping Center, 600 Kailua Rd. #129, Kailua, HI 96734, 808-262-1800.

Hawaii Kai Loves Burgers and Teddy's Responds with Expanded Digs
The ever-popular Teddy's Bigger Burgers is expanding the seating at its Hawaii Kai location to meet growing demand. Don't worry, the modest renovations will not force the establishment to close. All work is expected to be completed before the busy holiday season.

Chef Shuffles

Chai Chaowasaree, chef and owner of Chai's Island Bistro and Singha Thai Cuisine has been named the new executive chef for Hawaiian Airlines. Chaowasaree takes over from Beverly Gannon of Maui's Hali'imaile General Store who has held the position for the past decade. Chaowasaree will first revamp the menus of the new Honolulu-Tokyo route and then move on to the menus for all domestic and international flights of the airline. Chai's Island Bistro, Aloha Tower Marketplace, 1 Aloha Tower Dr., Honolulu, HI 96813, 808-585-0011.
