RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Tommy DeAlano is better known as a club owner (Candleroom, Sunset Lounge) than a restaurateur, but for Oak, he drafted a high-roller team: tasteful design firm Plan B (Bolsa, Cedars Social, and practically every restaurant in Dallas these days) and chef Jason Maddy, formerly of the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek. Menu items include a duo of Kobe beef with spaetzle and caramelized onions, or a duck breast with lentils and Brussels sprouts. Located in the up-and-coming Design District, the restaurant uses its namesake oak savvily, with pale-stained oak flooring and a showpiece chef's table. Oak, 1628 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas, TX 75207, 214-712-9700.

A second branch of Sfuzzi, the sultry Italian concept revived by restaurateur Robert Colombo (Trece, Villa-O), has opened in Irving, and it's even hotter than the original one that opened on McKinney Avenue in Uptown last year. Taking over the old Las Colinas Prime (and before that, Republic) space, Sfuzzi Las Colinas is an elegant oasis in the 'burbs with an open kitchen, multiple dining areas, a popular bar, foyer with red satin couches, and even a coat-check room. An expanded menu ranges from $10 sandwiches to $40 steaks --- something for everyone. Sfuzzi, 525 Meadow Creek Dr., Irving, TX 75039, 214-390-9801.

La Piazza Moves to Fort Worth's Cultural District
After fifteen years in University Park Village, La Piazza has moved to a new address in Fort Worth's cultural district. The new space on Bledsoe is a block from the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and south of the trendy West Seventh Street complex, and boasts an outdoor "piazza" a.k.a. patio. Despite the move, the restaurant hasn't abandoned its dress code --- T-shirts, shorts, tank tops, and tennis shoes are still not permitted, and jeans are accepted only if they're clean, pressed, and accompanied by a jacket. La Piazza, 2930 Bledsoe St., Fort Worth, TX 76107, 817-334-0000.

Chef Shuffle

Central 214 at Hotel Palomar Dallas Graham Dodds joins Central 214 at Kimpton's Hotel Palomar as executive chef, where he brings his trademark focus on regionally-sourced farm-to-table food. Dodds, who was most recently at Bolsa in Oak Cliff, has already introduced a new winter menu, which highlights blood sausage ravioli, oxtail ragout with crispy gnocchi, cauliflower "risotto," and butternut squash Parmesan with burrata and Tom Spicer's arugula. New starters include a salad made of Brussels sprouts and pork belly, and salt cod fritters. Dodds also updated the bar snacks menu with treats such as Scotch eggs, quail with leek spaetzle, and triple --- not double --- cooked fries. The Kimpton plans to execute a major renovation of the restaurant in late spring. Central 214, Hotel Palomar Dallas, 5680 N. Central Expwy., Dallas, TX 75206, 214-443-9339.
