In an Art Deco-inspired space in the Garment District, food hall The Deco Food + Drink offers Mexican eats, Afghan comfort fare, French baked items and tartines at Mademoiselle (from Maman), and more. The Deco Food + Drink, 231 W. 39th St., New York, NY 10018, 646-993-1650.
What was formerly the wine bar L’Argot is now L’Artista, a restaurant serving Northern Italian cuisine in Hamilton Heights. Executive chef-partner German Rizzo (Plado Tasting Bar) offers Kobe beef meatballs with pecorino and green peas, and wild mushrooms lasagna. Bar Bête in Carroll Gardens offers the French-Canadian food of owner-head chef Marc St. Jacques. Joe Ogrodnek, the chef behind former neighborhood favorites Battersby and Dover, is an operating partner. Soho Diner, the new 24-hour American eatery at Soho Grand Hotel with chef Ken Addington, serves buttermilk pancakes, avocado toast, a smoked salmon platter, fried chicken, and a “Stinky” cheeseburger with red wine onions and French dressing. Avena, the Greenwich Village Italian restaurant from chef Roberto Deiaco (Armani/Ristorante, Cipriani), has a new location on the Upper East Side. Here, Deiaco offers his take on Italian fare for brunch, lunch and dinner. Avena UES, 22 E. 66th St., New York, NY 10065, 646-596-8447.
Mussel escabeche, chicken meatballs with herb moji and confit egg yolk, and hatch chili pan-roasted pork collar are on the menu at The Banty Rooster. The Southwestern-inspired restaurant is from Delores Tronco-DePierro (Work & Class in Denver) and her husband, the chef John DePierro. P.F. Pasta al Forno, the casual restaurant from Fiaschetteria Pistoia owner Emanuele Bugiani, serves baked pasta by the slice in the West Village. Hand Hospitality, the restaurant group behind Her Name is Han, O:N, Atoboy and Atomix, and chef Hoyoung Kim (Jungsik) partnered to launch JUA. Kim will offer a Korean tasting menu with a focus on wood-fired cooking. JUA, 36 E. 22nd St., New York, NY 10010, 646-590-1598.
Mike Fadem, Gavin Compton and Joey Scalabrino, from Bushwick restaurant Ops, have opened Leo in Williamsburg, part take-out café and part 70-seat restaurant. Pizza is the focus, but other dishes include meatballs, lasagna and farinata. Leo, 318 Grand St., Brooklyn, NY 11211, 718-384-6531.
The team behind popular lunch spot Dig (previously Dig Inn) has opened a full-service restaurant named 232 Bleecker with former Untitled chef Suzanne Cupps overseeing the kitchen. The newcomer serves seasonal vegetable dishes, homemade pastas, and the likes of black sea bass with coconut curry and bok choy, and porchetta with sunchokes and pickled fennel. 232 Bleecker, 232 Bleecker St., New York, NY 10014, 646-905-5800.
The family behind Plant Love House launched Noods n’ Chill in Williamsburg, which is a combination noodle shop and Thai-style café. In Chelsea, Alfred Portale, the longtime former chef of Gotham Bar & Grill, has opened the Italian restaurant Portale. The menu includes dishes like burrata with roasted beets, poached fruit and pistachios, and duck breast with sunchokes, roasted radicchio and honey. Chef Jae Lee's restaurant Nowon in the East Village offers Korean-American fare with an emphasis on wok-cooked dishes. Ivo Diaz (The NoMad), his mother Isbelis Diaz and consulting chef Luis Herrera are behind Casa Ora in Williamsburg. THE WELL Kitchen & Table, the restaurant in the club THE WELL that’s open to the public, features seasonal, local ingredients in dishes like a sprouted quinoa and bean burger and wild halibut with savoy cabbage. In the former Rebelle space in the Bowery, David Burke has opened Mister French, a French restaurant and lounge, which will feature burlesque and other performances. Le Crocodile offers a French brasserie-style menu in Williamsburg's Wythe Hotel. Guests can expect dishes such as rabbit and duck rillettes, escargots, steak frites, halibut with beurre blanc, and profiteroles served in a clubby, chic space. The team behind Chikarashi, the poke bowl spot, has opened Chikarashi Isso, a full-service restaurant where chef Michael Jong Lim cooks up tempura, yakitori, udon, wok lobster and uni risotto.
