Openings

Award-winning chef Dan Krohmer and his Other Mama team have opened Chamana’s Café at 3655 S. Durango Drive, Suite 29.

Situated in the same shopping center as Other Mama, the restaurant serves a unique blend of dishes that balance familiar flavors with time-honored Mexican recipes using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and perfectly brewed coffee in an Oaxaca-influenced café setting. Dishes include empanadas with options of bean and cheese, chorizo and potato, or chicken tinga; chilaquiles with tortilla chips cooked in rich salsa verde; pozole with hominy and tender pork topped with fresh fixings; and steak and eggs—grilled steak paired with eggs prepared to order with a choice of rice and beans or skillet potatoes with a side of homemade tortillas and signature salsa.

Opening hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. For more info and the complete menu, visit chamanascafe.com.

Roma Kitchen, serving classic Italian cuisine, is now open in Southern Highlands near Decatur and Cactus, and joins the eatery’s original location in Henderson.

The décor features a black and white color scheme with white tile floor, black curtains, white tablecloths, black booths and chairs and white brick walls.

The kitchen is helmed by chef Ricardo Romo, who spent several years working at renowned restaurants on the Strip such as Michael Mina’s Seablue, STK, Mastro’s Ocean Club and Beer Park before opening his own: Chef’s Roma Kitchen on Horizon Ridge in Henderson.

Highlights of the menu are grilled vegetable salad with warm broccoli, artichoke, asparagus, cherry tomato and red pepper; gnocchi with cream sauce, truffles and mushroom; main courses including NY steak, pork chop, branzino, Chilean seabass, veal parmigiana and chicken marsala; and Italian dessert favorites like tiramisu, cheesecake, gelato and sorbet.

Hours are Mon-Thur 4-9 p.m., Fri-Sat 4-10 p.m., and Sun 4-8 p.m.

Ellis Island Selling Holiday Nog
Ellis Island’s yearly Ellis Family Holiday Nog, now in its 22nd year of commercial production, is now available for purchase.

The dairy-based beverage fortified with bourbon, rum and brandy is a closely guarded family recipe with a tradition that began when Ellis Island owner Gary Ellis’ grandfather, Frank Ellis, Sr., learned about the recipe from a fellow passenger on a ship taking him from Italy to the US back in 1953; in the 1980s, after his grandfather passed away, Gary Ellis found the recipe and began making small batches in his home kitchen.

5,600 bottles were created this year using 24,000 eggs, 275 gallons of spirits, and a few secret ingredients. The Holiday Nog is available by the glass ($10) or by the bottle ($40). Customers can purchase it until it’s sold out at Ellis Island Casino and all Village Pub locations.
