RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Capitol Hill favorite El Greco has morphed into Table 219. El Greco owners, Gary Snyder and Stacey Hettinger have spruced up the space by putting in high banquets and bistro tables in the front of the restaurant, adding new lighting, and revamping the bar---all to create a cozy level of intimacy. They're bringing in a full time bartender and introducing a small plates dinner menu, but keeping the popular brunch menu as is. Table 219, 219 Broadway Ave. E., Seattle, WA 98102, 206-328-4604.

After several months of renovations, The Virginia Inn has reopened with seating for 80, an expanded sidewalk cafe, and a more upscale, evolving menu. Longtime fans need not fret. The famous burger is still on the menu as are the signature crab cakes. Plus, the Inn is now serving steak frites, mussels, and salmon. Lunch and dinner are served daily. The Virginia Inn, 1937 First Ave., Seattle, WA 98101, 206-728-1937.

Battered and fried seafood will be on the menu at this new stand-up dining spot organized by Michael Hebberoy (founder of the underground dining experience at One Pot), Mike McConnell (Caffé Vita, Via Tribunali), and Jerry Everard (Rendezvous, Neumo's, Moe's). Five to six different fish will be served everyday---ranging from cod, halibut and oysters to more exotic seafood such as skate---and will be accompanied by several from-scratch sauces. Pike Street Fish Fry will be open Monday to Saturday, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., with lunch hours starting soon. Pike Street Fish Fry, 925 E. Pike St., Seattle, WA 98122, no phone available yet.

Dine Out on Gourmet TV Dinners
On "TV Tuesday," Veil restaurant offers gourmet TV dinners served on stylish, heavy, porcelain plates with a main dish nook and three compartmentalized squares for side dishes along the top. But rather than the one-dimensional Salisbury steaks typical of earlier incarnations of this American meal, today's diners can expect dishes such as all-natural baked chicken with two-year-old Cabot Cheddar macaroni and cheese, fresh and local vegetables, and a treat such as Valrhona chocolate brownies with house-made cinnamon marshmallows. TV dinner components will change weekly, and are priced from $16 to $20. Each will always include a winning combination of protein, starch, vegetable and a delicious sweet treat. Veil, 555 Aloha St., Seattle, WA 98109, 206-216-0600.

Sip on a $200 Cocktail
The Golf Club at Newcastle announces the creation a $200 zesty homage to the Bloody Mary. Aptly named "The Cure" to shake away your present state-of-mind and worries that ail you, this über drink comes with a few other spoils, including 18 holes of golf on The Golf Club at Newcastle's signature course, Coal Creek, a Monte Cristo White cigar, and a sleeve of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. With warm summer weather coming soon, you can enjoy sipping "The Cure" on both the Newcastle's outdoor patios, the Calcutta Grill and the Wooly Toad. The Golf Club at Newcastle, 15500 Six Penny Ln., Newcastle, WA 98059, 425-793-5566.

Savor the Flavors of Abruzzo at Il Fornaio
Influenced by small fishing hamlets along the Adriatic Sea and lush summer pastures in the highlands, the bold flavors of the Abruzzo region make their mark at Il Fornaio. From May 5 to 18, Il Fornaio's menu will include pane scima, a regionally inspired bread, dishes such as macceroni alla Chitarra, house-made saffron square spaghetti with lamb and bacon ragu, and peperoncino, cheeses flavored with local herbs. Desserts such as torroncini (a very hard candy) and amaretto-kissed cookies add a sweet finale. Il Fornaio, 600 Pine St., Seattle, WA 98101, 206-264-0994.
