Michael Mina, recently named GAYOT.com's Best Restaurateur of 2011, will be opening a wine bar this coming April in Seattle's Joshua Greene building at 4th Avenue and Pike. It will be a spin-off of RN74 in San Francisco.
Seattle restaurants and chefs are well-represented in the James Beard Foundation's list of semifinalists for the coveted 2011 James Beard Awards. Representing the first cut before the final five nominees in each category are announced March 21, Seattle nominees include: Outstanding Restaurateur: Tom Douglas (Tom Douglas Restaurants), Outstanding Chefs: Holly Smith (Cafe Juanita), and Jerry Traunfeld (Poppy); Outstanding Restaurant: Cafe Juanita; Outstanding Service: Canlis; Outstanding Wine Service: Canlis (wine director Nelson Daquip); Rising Star Chef of the Year: Blaine Wetzel (The Willows Inn on Lumi Island); and Best New Restaurant: Staple & Fancy Mercantile. Best Northwest Chef nominations go to: Chris Ainsworth, Saffron Mediterranean Kitchen (Walla Walla); Seif Chirchi and Rachel Yang (Joule); Matt Dillon, Sitka & Spruce; Mark Fuller, Spring Hill; Ethan Stowell, Staple & Fancy Mercantile; and Jason Stratton, Spinasse.
Charming, family-friendly Mioposto in the Mt. Baker neighborhood is poised to open a more sophisticated outpost in Phinney Ridge (7404 Greenwood Avenue North), which will include a full-service bar and a year-round patio. Although breakfast at Mioposto is popular, it won't be served at the new location which will open mid-April but initially only for dinner. Mioposto, 3601 S. Kirkland's bin on the lake is offering a creative twist on wine dinners with "bin on the move," a dinner party offered the third Sunday of every month at a different unusual location (not at the lakeside restaurant). Each gathering includes a five-course dinner prepared by chef R. Paul Hyman, and wine pairings from a select Washington winery. This exclusive dinner is limited to 11 guests, who will dine privately with the winemaker. The location will be disclosed 24 hours prior to the dinner. Tickets are $140 per person, plus a 20% gratuity and tax (total is $184.80).
