RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

The innovative and successful restaurateurs behind Bastille Cafe & Bar, Poquitos, Macleod's, and the recently-opened Stoneburner, are opening a German beer hall as their next venture. To be named Von Trapp's, the place is slated to open on 12th Avenue in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Expect the large and, no doubt, very hip, beer hall to have indoor bocce courts, plus house-made sausages and pretzels.

Globally-sourced sustainable seafood will be featured at Rock Creek, a new restaurant being built by Eric Donnelly, the chef at Toulouse Petit. Located at 4300 Fremont Avenue North, the fish-focused restaurant takes advantage of Donnelly's seven years at Oceanaire.

Two Brazilian steak houses and a pho restaurant are enlivening Belltown's reviving restaurant scene. Fumaça Brazilian Restaurant opened last year on the somewhat jinxed corner of Denny and First (the space formerly housed Minnie's, Whym, Blush and 101 Restaurant). The two owners --- Sandra Pizarro and Maritza Texeira --- worked together at Ipanema Grill on the Harbor Steps. Offering an "All You Can Eat" lunch for $24, and the same as a $40 dinner, Fumaça will find competition from the glitzier Grill from Ipanema on First and Bell being built on the location of the short-lived Mestizo Tequila Lounge and Grill. Belltown also welcomes Local Pho, a family-owned Vietnamese restaurant  on Third Avenue and Bell.

Rover's, one of Seattle's finest restaurants, will be serving its last meal in April. Owner-chef Thierry Rautureau has announced that he will be closing his restaurant, which opened 25 years ago, and was one of the first restaurants to combine Pacific Northwest ingredients with classic French techniques. According to Rautureau, he felt it was time to move on partially because his 10-year lease ended. Luc, Rautureau's casual French bistro that opened in 2011 a few doors down from Rover's, will remain open. Rover's, 2808 E. Madison St., Seattle, WA 98112, 206-325-7442.

Two of Seattle's favorite and oldest  eateries --- Costas Opa and B & O Espresso --- closed at the end of December 2012. After three decades, Costsa Opa, the popular Greek restaurant in Fremont across from the "Waiting for the Interurban" sculpture served its last souvlaki. Chef/owner Costas Antonopoulos decided it was time to retire. B & O Espresso, one of Seattle's oldest and most beloved coffee shops, closed its doors after 36 years and endless rumors of its demise. New rumors indicate it may resurface in Ballard.
