RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

From the owners of West Village French restaurant Sel et Gras comes Charlemagne, also in the West Village. The restaurant serves classic French fare, sometimes with a slight Spanish twist. Charlemagne, 679 Greenwich St., New York, NY 10014, 646-558-5623.

Chef Michael Psilakis's MP Taverna turns out elevated Greek fare in Astoria. The menu features the meaty dishes Psilakis grew up eating. MP Taverna, 31-29 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria, NY 11105, 718-777-2187.

Andrew Carmellini opened French restaurant Lafayette Andrew Carmellini's much-hyped French restaurant, Lafayette, has officially fired up its burners. Gallic classics are served in a stately atmosphere that evokes another New York French restaurant: Balthazar. Lafayette, 380 Lafayette St., New York, NY 10003, 212-533-3000.

Burger Joint, the famously "hidden" burger restaurant in the Le Parker Meridien New York, has opened up an outpost in Greenwich Village. The menu will be largely the same but the space is three times bigger than the original. Burger Joint, 33 W. 8th St., New York, NY 10003, 212-432-1400.

Chef Jesus Nuñez has opened up Melibea, a restaurant adjacent to his West Village restaurant Barraca. While Barraca is about straightforward Spanish cuisine, Melibea is less so, harkening back to Nuñez's now-closed experimental eatery on the Upper West Side, Gastroarte. Melibea, 2 Bank St., New York, NY 10014, 212-463-0090.

The chef team of Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi have opened Italian-inflected hot-spot Carbone. Housed in the former home of an old-school red sauce joint, this new venture is --- an old-school red sauce joint. And intentionally so. Carbone and Torrisi try to capture the essence and atmosphere of middle-class Italian-American restaurants from 1950s New York City. Carbone, 181 Thompson St., New York, NY 10012, 212-254-3000.
