RESTAURANT NEWS

Openings

Chef John Fraser, who helms the kitchen at the Upper West Side's Dovetail, has just opened What Happens When, a NoLIta pop-up restaurant. The eatery will change its focus, menu, and design every 30 days until it closes in nine months. What Happens When, 25 Cleveland Pl., New York, NY 10012, no phone.

Opening in the old Zito Bakery spot in Greenwich Village is Barcelona-based pizza chain Roma Pizza. Expect pies, pies, and more pies at this euro-style pizzeria. Roma Pizza, 259 Bleecker St., New York, NY 10014, 212-924-1970.

El Camion, a new Mexican joint in the East Village, serves up variations on the taco theme as well as south-of-the-border small plates and creative cocktails. El Camion, 194 Ave. A, New York, NY 10003, 212-533-5436.

Former Dévi top toque Hemant Mathur has opened Tulsi, which means "holy basil" in Hindi. The restaurant will serve elevated Indian fare, not too different from the acclaimed dishes he served at Dévi. Tulsi, 211 E. 46th St., New York, NY 10017, 212-888-0820.

Shorty's.32 chef Josh Eden has teamed up with fashion designer Sally Wu to open Ten Ten, a pan-Asian eatery for dining in or taking out. Ten Ten, 413 Second Ave., New York, NY 10010, 212-951-7119.

Gabriel Stulman (Joseph Leonard, Jeffrey's Grocery) has taken over the longtime Fedora restaurant space in the West Village and restored it to shiny glory. The restaurant will emphasize cocktails, so look for some great libations to hit West 4th Street. Fedora, 239 W. 4th St., New York, NY 10014, 646-449-9336.

News Bytes
Trump on the Green?
Word on the street (or green?) is that Donald Trump is in talks to revive the legendary Tavern on the Green. "The Donald" will pump millions of dollars into the restaurant. He may even change the name to Trump on the Green. Let's hope not.

New Life for Florent Space?
It looks like the ghost of now-defunct Meatpacking District diner Florent may be finally resurrected. Sort of. Remi Laba (of Bagatelle fame) is said to be opening up a wine bar in the space. No word yet on the opening date.

Restaurant Week Is Back!
It's that time of year again. The snow is on the ground. The temperature has dropped. And Restaurant Week has arrived. From January 24 to February 6, enjoy lunch (and, in many cases, dinner) at some of New York's finest restaurants for a fraction of what you might normally pay. A three-course lunch costs $24.07 and dinner $35. Participating restaurants include Le Cirque, Café Boulud, Adour Alain Ducasse and Dovetail among many others. For more information, visit http://www.nycgo.com/restaurantweek/.

Getting Fatty on Carmine Street
Cabrito may be closed, but Zak Pelaccio isn't giving up on the space. He'll eventually open a new restaurant there, but in the meantime, he gives us the pop-up restaurant Fatty Johnson's, which will be serving up, uh, fatty fare as well as creative cocktails. Fatty Johnson's, 50 Carmine St., New York, NY 10014, 212-929-5050.

Chef Shuffle
Richard Brown has taken over the kitchen duties at Etrusca, the in-house restaurant at the Hilton New York. Etrusca, Hilton New York, 125 W. 53rd St., New York, NY 10019, 212-261-5750.

Eric Hara has left his post at The Oak Room to take over the kitchen duties at the new Hell's Kitchen eatery 9. The Oak Room, The Plaza, 768 Fifth Ave., New York, NY 10019, 212-758-7777.

Chef Shlomi Biton of the brand new Upper East Side dumpling spot Mahjong has already left the restaurant. His replacement has not been officially announced.

Closings

Tonda, the spacious East Village pizzeria located in the old E.U. space, has shut down.

Cascabel Taqueria, the Upper East Side eatery on Second Ave. and E. 80th St., has shut down and been transformed into Mahjong, a dumpling restaurant.

The West Village restaurant Braeburn has shut down. Chef Brian Bistrong is said to have now joined the Bouley empire. Braeburn, 117 Perry St., New York, NY 10014, no phone.

We figured the West Village "tavern" Patty & Bun probably would last about a year. And we were right. About a year after opening, the restaurant on 8th Street near Sixth Avenue has shut down.

The longtime Chelsea restaurant, Cabo Rojo, has closed for good.

A major fire has crippled new East Village eatery 6th Street Kitchen. It will be closed for some time.
