Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Jean Georges, Spice Market) has opened The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges in The Mark New York hotel. The menu will feature dishes such as prosciutto wrapped veal chop, and buckwheat fettuccine with seafood, Parmesan and chili. An oven fire has wiped out The Brooklyn Star; chef-owner Joaquin Baca says it will be a few months before he can reopen. The Brooklyn Star, 33 Havemeyer St., Brooklyn, NY 11211, 718-599-9899.
Bravo has announced the contestants that will compete on the second season of "Top Chef Masters." Representing New York's restaurants are chefs Jimmy Bradley (The Red Cat, The Harrison), David Burke (Davidburke Townhouse, Fishtail by David Burke), Wylie Dufresne (wd-50), Susur Lee (Shang), Marcus Samuelsson (Aquavit, Riingo) and Jonathan Waxman (Barbuto). The NYC Department of Health is planning to introduce letter grades to inspections, similar to the system used in Los Angeles. Despite opposition from restaurant owners, the plan is currently set to start in July 2010.
Michael Hyunh will not take over the Clinton Street space he was eyeing. Instead it will become Eastern Alley, with chef Sean Scotese from Mai House behind the stove.
